We are very proud that Asociatia Telefonul Copilului has become part of the BRCC's Associate members and we would like to take this opportunity in order to thank BRCC most kindly for offering to us this honour.

Asociatia Telefonul Copilului operates in Romania the European harmonized number for child helplines 116 111, already implemented in other 12 European member states. This toll free phone line, free of charge in Romtelecom and Cosmote’s networks, is the “first aid” phone line for children who need to talk about any bothering issue.

Asociatia Telefonul Copilului provides the following services:

    *  information & counselling on child rights issues
    * juridical counselling according to the legislation into force on specific child related cases
    *  referral to the contact persons at the level of both local and national institutions able to offer adequate assistance to cases which need immediate intervention
    *  cases monitoring

The need for the Romanian Child HelpLine is each year reconfirmed by the enormous number of callers. Since 2001 almost 1½ million children and parents have benefited from our services and the number of phone calls has tripled during the last year. This year children called mainly (but not only) to talk about problems at school, physical abuse, neglect, lack of self confidence, loneliness and sadness. They want to be listened to and are in need to be encouraged. As for the parents, they mostly requested for legal advice for specific issues on the rights of the child.

Our organization is also a full member Child Helpline International, the umbrella organization of child helplines worldwide.
