BOCM Pauls, a UK feed company, sells premixes and complete feeds to Romania’s swine industry.  Nutritional and technical advice is a big part of this business.  It has delivered top results for Romanian farmers:  heavier pigs at weaning and lower feed costs. 

The company’s business has grown during the twelve years it has been active in Romania and beginning with 2004  BOCM Pauls Ltd set up BOCM Pauls Srl. 
It has built this business carefully from the ground up through hands-on experience with local conditions and hog production.  Management understands real-live production problems and farmer motivation and mentality.  It does not make assumptions at arm’s length about these issues; it has first-hand experience with them and knows them thoroughly.  This long-term experience and industry background in Romania plus in-depth practical experience in livestock and feed operations in an EU environment position BOCM Pauls very advantageously.  The company expects to continue expanding its business after EU accession.  It also anticipates using Romania as a base for commercial operations in Bulgaria, and Republic   of Moldova.

Romania‘s EU accession had multiple effects on animal production and the feed industry. 
Part of the transition has already been accomplished during the years of preparations. 
For instance, regulations on worker safety, food safety, and the environment have been harmonized with those of the EU.  Carcass standards have been changed to match the EU’s since this is the basis for payments.  Many buildings and processing plants have been constructed or modernized during the last few years are already in compliance with EU standards.  There are numerous other changes that have been made already such that EU accession was not so much an endpoint and finale as it is a point in Romania’s continued evolution. 

The company is upgrading its product offerings in Romania.  In tandem with this, it is setting up a database of locally produced feed ingredients.  This database will be a powerful tool in optimizing ration formulation since it will enable a farmer to accurately distinguish regional differences in the nutritional composition of feed ingredients.  BOCM PAULS plans a series of nutrition seminars in locations throughout the country to present the advantage of these changes to farmers.
