11/03/2010 - Last Week Saw Britain’s Largest Ever Gathering Of Romanian Construction Managers And Supervisors To Discuss Health And Safety Issues.
8 March 2010
Last week saw Britain’s largest ever gathering of Romanian construction managers and supervisors to discuss health and safety issues.
More than 50 London-based Romanian construction professionals attended a Safety and Health Awareness Day organised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), held on 2 March.
It was held at London's Romanian Cultural Institute with the assistance of the Romanian embassy and covered employers' legal duties on construction sites, guidance on working safely at height and provided detailed information on training courses provided by the National Construction College.
The event was part of an outreach project set up by HSE, which aims to raise awareness amongst migrant construction workers about the existence of HSE, UK health and safety standards and workers' rights at work. It targets the three largest migrant construction worker populations - Polish, Romanian and Indian.
HSE has recruited outreach workers who can speak the relevant languages, and has launched a high profile campaign involving the targeted distribution of information, sustained community newspaper intervention and radio and web-based advertising.
Philip White HSE's Chief Inspector of Construction said:
"The work that the outreach team are doing is really making a difference. The team was set up to help us target information to some of the more vulnerable workers in construction and allow us to get our messages across much more effectively. Reducing the risks faced by the most vulnerable enables all construction workers to work in safer conditions.”
Bogdan Carpa-Vechi, labour attache at the Romanian embassy said:
“The event was a great success and gave attendants the opportunity to find out more about the rights and responsibilities they have under Health and Safety law.
The campaign as a whole has made workers more aware of the role played by HSE, and how they can report problems. I am pleased to have worked with the HSE team on this project and am confident the results of this campaign can already be seen”.
