Light into Europe - working with sensory impaired children and young people
6 years ago, when we started this project as a continuation of our charity work here in Romania since 1990, we were supporting just 50 deaf children in one school. It is now over 3,000 children in 12 schools around the country and more than 500 families who benefit from our services.
We have made a commitment to support each child by giving him or her a strong educational foundation, the beginning of a good quality of life, self esteem and values.
We are here in response to the unique problems facing the sensory impaired and their families and in recognition of the disparity between the number of such children and the availability of appropriate education and support.
We focus on the essential needs and rights of education and independent living of the sensory impaired.
1. Need of adequate education, adapted to their abilities and skills.
Partners in education is the project aiming to ensure training, information and special educational materials to the professionals and pupils of the schools for sensory impaired and building partnerships with mainstream schools in Romania and abroad.
2. Need of being valued and cherished like all the other children and receive individual support.
Every child matters is an unique service that provides individual/group intervention, activities, support and materials to enhance the abilities and skills of each sensory impaired child we work with for achieving later full life potential.
3. Need of accessing information and knowledge in specific format
We provide individual textbooks and other educational materials in appropriate formats to children and young people with sensory impairments (big print, Braille, audio, sign language) and also assistive equipment to enhance access to information.
4. Need of building their independence and life skills
Independent living program means setting-up Independent living Studios in schools, providing courses and training to teachers, donating essential daily living equipment to sensory impaired young people and facilitating job opportunities or access to university studies.
5. Parents need of training, support and understanding
Parents Support Clubs empower and help families to make informed choices and provide information, training and advice covering a wide range of topics and issues to do with sensory impairments.
Our emphasis is on independence and enabling, we focus on our beneficiaries’ abilities, not their disabilities. Their potential is unlimited, with support, the blind and the deaf can do anything!
What we can’t do alone, we can do together!
